The history of the modern futon started in the eighteenth century when cotton became more available in Japan and the nobles were able to use it for filling their bedding.

When they were first introduced futon were only used by the most wealthy and occasionally by Geisha who were presented with them by patrons. As cotton became more available and less expensive futon became the bedding of choice for all Japanese and now even though modern Western mattresses are available, the majority of Japanese still prefer to use futons
