Unlike normal foam or sprung mattresses futon will benefit from care in keeping them well aired and dry.

For cotton futon it is recommended to roll the futon up each day so that the area under the futon can dry out fully. Ideally every week or so a futon should be aired either outside (not always so easy int he UK!) or hung over a piece of furniture or clothes horse to allow air to flow around the entire futon. Care should be taken not to have direct heat on the futon.
